Fighting Maritime Piracy:

Tanker Siriius Star Released by Somali Pirates after Ransom Delivery via Parachute | Maritimesecurity.comThe Horn of Africa continues to remain as a center of terrorism despite the U.S. and allied military presence in the region (Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa / CJTF-HOA). While the Global War On Terror is pursuing predominantly land based international terrorism, the maritime criminals have been active in the area for many years, and have until recently enjoyed an unlimited and unchallenged free range of operations throughout the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and the coastal waters of the Indian Ocean off Somalia. Numerous attacks, ship hijackings, and kidnappings have occurred, and continue to occur in the region. However, this may soon be changing with the recent (1/8/2009) forming of a dedicated counter-piracy naval task force in that region.

U.S. Navy Counter-Piracy and Maritime Security Forces

Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151) was formed January 8, 2009 with the specific mission of conducting counter-piracy operations in the Horn of Africa maritime region. CTF-151 will assume the lead role in fighting piracy and will be augmented by Combined Task Force 150 (CTF-150). CTF-150 was formed just after the launch of Operation Enduring Freedom to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. CTF-150 was not a dedicated counter-piracy force; its primary mission was the deterrence of destabilizing activities, such as drug smuggling and weapons trafficking.
